The first time we see snow.
We left our home in Oeiras at 6:30 in the morning and set the GPS to Serra da Estrela in the north. It is the highest point in mainland Portugal at 1,993 meters. In winter it hosts a ski resort. So, after having checked an online webcam to see if there were snow. We went.
The trip up there were kind of boring as it was on highways all the way to the city Covilhã, here started the climb toward the top. You can drive all the way to the top so it was a breeze, but at the top it was really cold -7 degrees centigrade, much too cold and windy, we didn’t know this so we stayed at the top only to take a few pictures and then we wanted to get down and return home. If ever we again go to the snow we will be better prepared and wear a lot of clothes 😀
The view from the top is, however, very beautiful. And if you go to Portugal, summer or winter we fully recommend you to go there. Just make sure you are prepared for real winter if you go in the cold season.
P.S.
On the way back our car broke down, we got amazing help from our insurance company Zürich and we got a car to drive home, a Peugeot 308 and what a difference from our 20 year old Audi A4. Unfortunately our Audi was unable to go anywhere the next month, or so, as the workshop couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. Finally they did and we could get on to new adventures.
